.....I am going to scream. No I have nothing against that ever popular summer footwear. So far both Obama and McCain have been accused of flip-flopping on certain key points. Does it matter? Is it important? I personally do not think it matters much. At least not as much as the party leaders think.
These two campaigns are just now starting to take shape. They are just now trying to figure out what it is going to take to win this election. In many ways they are trying to figure out what is best for our country and what we the people need and want.
As I have grown older and wiser I too have changed many of my opinions from when I was young and perhaps foolish. My family is very grateful for that fact.
If it were true that "you cannot teach an old dog new tricks" then McCain would be in serious trouble. Holding on to ideas or even ideals that you once did just so people cannot call you a "flip-flopper" makes one stubborn and dangerous. I keep hearing that the McCain of 2000 would not vote for the McCain of 2008. Good. Let us just hope that the McCain of 2008 is a little smarter than the one that inhabited his body eight years prior.
I would imagine that when you have reached the level that these two candidates have reached that they have access to advisors and experts that they did not prior to this. No one man can be an expert in everything. I do not expect Obama or McCain to know everything there is to know about the military, economics, agriculture, foreign policy etc. etc.. I do however expect them to surround themselves with people that are the experts in these areas. I expect them to listen to their advice and act once all the information is in. These two men are learning. The one who does become President of the United States will have access to even more information. I suspect that some of this information will further effect and possibly change how they will handle things.
Many commentators have speculated that these two men are making policy changes just to appease the voters. The implication is that this is a terrible thing. Not necessarily. In democratic rule the belief is held that those we elect represent we the people. We are going to vote for the candidate that most closely represents our interests. Moving toward the center is certainly politically expedient. More voters congregate in the center. If you stay to the far left or the far right you represent a smaller portion of the population. If by changing your policies you satisfy a larger portion of the population then this would seem to me to be a good thing.
Of course this is only true if we consider the voters to be intelligent, informed and have the best interest of our country in mind.
I am a voter and you are a voter. I am not prepared to think either of us are stupid.

While you make a valid point yet, let me ask, just when do you formulate a concept, idea, a solution a course of action and develop it and stick by it? That is called leadership, discerning, weighing of outcomes, forming a course of action, implementing it and seeing through to a successful conclusion. Now being able to adjust the plan, change, alter is all part of sound planning and leadership but don't make a statement you know nothing about until you have to make a decision and you have all the facts. Certainly people can and do change their minds. However, in leadership you do not blow with the wind one day and make a change and then suddenly wind up at back at home base. In my opinion that is the issue at hand. One day they say one thing the next another. Yes to Hispanic's one thing, to free traders another and to the masses well something entirely different. Great article, Dan. I loved your play on the word "flip-flop". We may all be doing a lot of_______ing (and I won't say the word, so you won't have to hear it again) before this election is over! Just when you think you have one of these guys figured out, he throws another curve ball at us. I was hoping that this would be one election that we wouldn't have to decide just between the 'lesser of two evils'; but I see now that this is not going to happen. Thanks for a great article. This has been the worst election ever, because the elite media has controlled the outcome of who got the nomination for both parties. The disgraceful use of their news and election coverage was the worst in history. It was intended to make Obama president. As for flip flopping, YES I SAID IT, it isn't wrong to change your mind if the situation warrants it; such as drilling for oil...something even some Scandanavian Countries are now doing offshore due to the new safe technology that is environmentally friendly...it has become safe; so changing your mind on certain subjects is not flipflop but common sense. Dan, this was an excellent article and I agree, if the candidates never changed their minds, we'd be in a heap of trouble. Actually, both candidates were against offshore drilling as well as ANWR, McCain changed his mind first but only after Newt Gingrich had pointed out to the nation just how stupid we were to be restricting those places when it has been shown that they can be drilled without anything near major damage to the environment.The comment just above this one is correct. Everybody is now going to drill offshore except us. Even Cuba with the assistance of China... in the Gulf of Mecxico.
