The Definition Of Soul Mates

If you ask most people what the term soul mate means they would most likely reply that soul mates are two people who are destined to be together. Certainly popular movies and fiction perpetuates this view.
This definition would suggest that there is only one person in the whole world that we are supposed to be joined to. Since it is a really big world this fact could depress some romantics out there since it would be unlikely that most of us would ever find this one specific person.
Soul mates do not find each other. Two people BECOME soul mates. This process takes time and requires a lot of sunshine and a little rain.
Only after many years can we confidently say that we are with our soul mate. I believe that souls are dynamic forces and that some do attract others and conversely some repel others. Our soul is at the core of our being and our thoughts. When one thinks about another, and does so for another over and over again I am certain that our souls become familiar. Perhaps they even become dependent upon each other so that when one leaves the other feels lost and disoriented.
Two souls mix and join together just like the tears on your cheek mix with your mates as you hold each other and comfort each other through a difficult time.
Soul mates do not live life perfectly together. Sometimes you may even be so aggravated that you think about leaving them. Instead, you stay because the thought of being without them is even more painful.
Eventually two people who truly love one another come to the realization that it is impossible to win a battle if the other person gets hurt.
You must be able to forgive and realize that making someone pay over and over for some mistake is fruitless and only serves your own selfish needs. There is no joy in seeing the other person suffer but there is happiness in seeing the other person prosper and grow.
Soul mates spend a life time cuddling, holding hands and saying I love you. Our souls pay attention to what our bodies are doing, what our mouths are saying and what our brain is thinking.
If you are lucky you and your soul mate will spend many days laughing at your children's antics and only a few days will be spent going to the doctor and feeding them chicken soup.
When you have been sick for three days, have not showered, have greasy hair, and morning breath your soul mate will bring you a cold rag for your forehead, lotion to rub your feet, and will give you a hug that will take your breath away.
Soul mates cherish the good times but more importantly endure the bad times.
When you are young, your soul mate will fill your life with many fond memories while you are eating macaroni & cheese and frozen pizzas. These memories can be called upon when you have finally made it and can afford to sit down and eat prime rib and drink a nice glass of wine.
Concerning the idea that there is only one soul mate for each person. This fact can never be confirmed or denied because once you have a person like this in your life why in the hell would you go looking for another.
I would like to dedicate this to my truly wonderful wife Lindsay from who I have learned so much and to whom I would love to give everything that I possibly can. I can not wait until we can eat prime rib. I truly owe her my life.

Top-level comments on this article: (3 total)hi dan, this was a beautiful article, and one i could relate to. when i was 12 years old, i talked to a friend of a friend over the phone, and knew then that our lives would forever intermingle. we dated 12-19, broke up, went our separate ways for 23 years, got back, and we've been together almost 10 years.we were meant to be together. we scratch our heads at the same time, have to use the bathroom at the same time, go to pick up our drink at the same time, it's so weird, and sometines annoying. i know that is not an essental to soul mates, but our spirits are, and being alike is just a side affect. thank you for sharing, best regards, sue thomPlease log in to respond to this comment.Sue,Thankyou for sharing your story and thanks for reading. Having failed so many times at relationships I was about to give up. I'm glad I didn't.DanPlease log in to respond to this comment.
Hi Dan. This is a really beautiful story. I've always said that I don't believe in "love at first sight." That it is the love of the years that follow that make it seem so. But there is definitely something that attracts us to one person over another and maybe, just maybe, that is our soul "talking" to theirs and finding common ground.I think that just possibly my husband and I are indeed soul mates. But no matter, I am ever grateful to have him in my life. You and I are very lucky, are we not? With thanks for letting me see love through your eyes,DiannePlease log in to respond to this comment.Hi dianne, Very lucky and blessed indeed :-)However, I do believe in love at first sight. The day I met my husband I knew we would marry. In fact I told him that. He laughed at me. Although, why wouldn't he, I was only 13 and he was 17. But guess who had the last laugh :-)But it is true, love grows and changes and just when I think I couldn't love my husband more, I do and vice versa.Have a great evening! Please log in to respond to this comment.
Hi Dan, a beautiful story, filled with truth. I do believe my husband and I were made for eachother, And I do believe in love at first sight. I knew the moment I met my husband that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. But that does not mean life has been all bliss. There are good times and bad, hard times and easy, but like you said, no way would I give it up to see if there is something better! Excellent article. Please log in to respond to this comment.
