Sometimes You Have To Eat The Rat

Sometimes doing something difficult can be the best thing. Everybody goes through difficult times. Many times we do not have a choice.

Sometimes we make a choice to do something that we really do not want to do simply because it is for the best.

No one develops self-confidence by taking the easy route. No one develops self-confidence by having things handed to them.

It is only through trials that we grow. It is only by tackling those things that instill fear in us that we can overcome those fears. When we do this, we develop strength, character, and confidence.

These are not novel concepts. This is not a revelation to most people.

It is widely known that G. Gordon Liddy overcome his fear of rats by going down to the docks, killing a rat and then eating it. Drastic perhaps, well actually it is definitely drastic, but it illustrates the point beautifully.

What a feeling one has when people tell you that you cannot do something and then you do it anyway.

I must qualify the previous statement. I am not talking about breaking laws. For instance, driving 75 mph when the government says you cannot drive faster than 65 mph, is not very meaningful. I will allow that it does help you get to where you want to go a little faster just not as safely.

I am talking about the slightly chunky person or out of health person who is told they cannot run a marathon but do.

I am talking about the person who is told that going to college for "them" is a waste of time but graduates anyway.

I am talking about the person who is told that they will never be able to open a successful business but does it anyway.

Being able to hold your head up high after you accomplish things that people tell you that you cannot do is extremely gratifying. As gratifying as eating that banana cream pie for dessert after a big meal.

It is important to remember that you should never allow yourself dessert until you finish your meal.

Unfortunately sometimes that meal is a rat.

Dan, I couldn't eat a rat. I've had them as pets before and for me it would be akin to eating a dog. Now if someone told me I had to do what Mr. Liddy did to overcome my fear of snakes, I would have to tell them exactly where they could put that misguided notion. Still, you've made your point very well. We have to pay our dues.

Yeah, I think Mr. Liddy went a little over the top.  He has a history of that though.
